Healthy Breathing for a Healthier Lifestyle
No matter where you are on your wellness journey, breathing properly will allow you to take charge of an important part of your health. Most people take it for granted that they're breathing properly because no one ever taught them that there actually is a difference. For instance, did you know that breathing through your mouth is not good for your body? For one thing, it can drain your energy - especially at night when you're meant to be recharging your body.
Most people know that the air that enters your body through your mouth is not filtered like it is through your nose. That alone is a good enough reason to breathe through your nose. For those of you who regularly breathe through your nose, keep doing that because it's the proper way to breathe.
Learning to breathe properly is a process. That's why it's best to start out slowly with short exercises. Below are breathwork videos to inspire, reset, and reconnect you to your breath in a safe and welcoming space.
Breathwork Studies
Short Daily Breathwork vs Mindfulness:
A 2023 Stanford randomized study (114 participants), compared brief 5-minute breathwork protocols (cyclic sighing, box breathing, fast breath with retention) to mindfulness walks. Result: all methods reduced stress and improved mood, with cyclic sighing showing the strongest effect on emotional arousal.Global Wellness Institute.
Effect of breathwork on stress and mental health:
A 2023 comprehensive analysis of 26 randomized controlled trials involving 785 participants from Sussex University assessed the impact of breathwork on stress and mental health. It found that breathwork interventions were associated with lower levels of self-reported stress, anxiety, and depression compared to control conditions. Access the study.
Breath Therapy vs Physical Therapy in Low-Back Pain:
A randomized RCT found that 6–8 weeks of breath therapy yielded similar improvements in pain and function compared to traditional physical therapy, with breath therapy also increasing coping skills related to stress awareness. Access the study.
